You're reading: Resistance at Maidan resumes despite mourning, injured reported

Clashes between opposition supporters and law enforcement officers resumed on Thursday morning on Kyiv's main square, Maidan.

Firecrackers, flash bombs and flares are flying from both sides, the Interfax correspondent reported.

At least two people have already been injured – Maidan medical
service has performed an indirect heart massage to an injured activist
and an injured law enforcement officer was taken away.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has declared
Feb. 20 a day of mourning for those killed during mass disturbances.
Opposition leaders and Yanukovych held negotiations on Feb. 19 and
agreed on a truce.

Opposition activists currently continue building up the barricade
near the monument to the founders of Kyiv with metal shields and other
materials at hand. Molotov cocktails are being made and bricks have been
taken from the pavement around the post office for the defense of
Maidan.

Ambulances are going towards Maidan and thick smoke from tires being burned covers Maidan.

Opposition activists keep on coming to Maidan from Ukrainian regions and Kyiv residents arrive as well.

Traffic police checkpoints have been set on streets near Maidan and police do not let cars pass to the center of the resistance.

At the same time, at 9 am over a thousand people came from the
crossing near the Pecherska metro station and started to walk along
Kutuzov Street towards the Arsenalna metro station without chanting any
slogans. Some of them were reported to have sticks hidden under their
clothes.
