You're reading: Rompuy: EU leaders welcome holding of presidential elections in Ukraine

The Heads of State and Government of the European Union's welcomed holding of the presidential elections in Ukraine, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said during a press conference after the informal meeting in Brussels on May 28.

“The EU welcomes the holding presidential elections in Ukraine on Sunday, despite the hostile security environment in two eastern regions of the country,” he said.

Rompuy praised the high turnout and the fact that the elections “took place largely in line with international standards.”

“We look forward to working closely together with the new President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in view of ensuring the political and economic stability of Ukraine,” the EC president said on behalf of the European Union.
