Russia supports the speedy completion of the construction of a new sarcophagus over the fourth energy block at Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) and the decommissioning of the plant, Vice Premier of Russia Igor Sechin has said.

"Russia confirms its strong interest in cooperation with Ukrainian partners, international funds and organizations to take measures aimed at the decommissioning of Chornobyl NPP and the construction of a new protective shelter over the fourth energy block at the station," he said at the summit on the issues of safe and innovative use of nuclear energy in Kyiv.

"The speedy completion of the planned work is our duty to the victims of the Chornobyl accident and future generations," he stressed.

Sechin noted that on April 15 Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a decree to pass EUR 45 million to the Nuclear Safety Account and the Shelter Chornobyl Fund in 2011-2012.
