Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili is planning to make an unofficial visit to Kyiv to attend the Euro 2012 final, Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine Grigol Katamadze has said in an interview with Radio Liberty.

When asked whether Saakashvili plans to meet not only with the country’s top leaders, but also with representatives of the Ukrainian opposition, Katamadze said: “Because of such a short visit, there will be almost no meetings. I think that a meeting with the Ukrainian president will take place, because he will be in the stadium. I hope that guests from other countries will also come. However, bilateral meetings are not envisaged by the program.”

According to Radio Liberty, the deputy head of the Batkivschyna Party, Hryhoriy Nemyria, earlier called on European politicians, who intend to attend the Euro 2012 final Kyiv, to meet not only with Ukrainian government officials, but also with opposition members. On Thursday, Nemyria made this statement at the Congress of the European People’s Party in Brussels, which was also attended by the Georgian president.

“The Euro 2012 final, which will be held in Kyiv on July 1, apart from the Georgian president, is also to be attended by the president of Poland, the country that co-hosts the championship with Ukraine, as well as by the presidents of Belarus and Italy,” reads the statement.
