The State Border Service of Ukraine has said that it is expedient to continue the practice of carrying out joint border controls with neighboring countries.

"Joint controls, which we are currently introducing for the period of Euro 2012 with our Polish colleagues, indicate that customs clearance on the border favors the high-quality customs clearance of passengers, reduces the clearance time, and the question of border and customs clearance is resolved on the basis of mutual trust," Head of the State Border Service of Ukraine Mykola Lytvyn said at a joint briefing with Hungarian Ambassador to Ukraine Mihaly Bayer on Friday, when asked by Interfax-Ukraine whether the practice of joint controls with neighboring countries, particularly with Poland, will continue.

Lytvyn praised the system of joint controls. However, he said that in accordance with the requirements of the Schengen Code, joint controls between the EU and Ukraine could be conducted only in member countries of the European Union.

He said he hoped that Ukraine and Hungary would study this question in future.
