You're reading: Symonenko: Election campaign was the dirtiest in whole period of Ukraine’s independence

The recent parliamentary election campaign in Ukraine was the dirtiest in the entire period of Ukraine's independence, Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko has said.

“We believe that the election campaign was almost the dirtiest in the
whole period of Ukraine’s independence,” he said at a press conference
at Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday.

Symonenko said that a mixed electoral system had helped “big
businesses loosen their belts” and as a result there were a lot of cases
of bribery of members of election commissions, blackmailing,
intimidation, and the use of mudslinging, which “seriously undermines
authority and trust in Ukraine.”

He also drew attention to irregularities during the counting of
votes, particularly in Luhansk region. He said that during the
tabulation process in this region electricity was cut off in many
regions.

“It is terrible what the Regions Party did in Luhansk region, because
it was obvious that the Communist Party would get more votes there than
the Regions Party,” Symonenko said.
