Leader of the Communist Party of Ukraine Petro Symonenko has said that the election of the Svoboda All-Ukrainian Union to the Ukrainian parliament will be a tragedy for the country.

“The coming of the social-nationalist party Svoboda will be a tragedy for Ukraine,” he said at a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday.

According to the politician, the party “was used during the crisis, considering the active radicalization of moods. It was supported by huge capital to fight against the consolidation of Ukrainian citizens in the fight against the current regime.”

Symonenko also said that the Communist Party faction at the Verkhovna Rada would work independently.

“The Communist Party and its faction will act as an independent political force,” he said.

According to the politician, the faction will vote according to its pre-election program.

“The Communist Party was the only one of the political forces represented in the current parliament to double its popular vote,” Symonenko said.
