Tensions persist along the contact line between the Ukrainian army and the militants near Shyrokyne in the Mariupol area and the sides are trading gunfire accusations.

“There was a clash [in Shyrokyne] at 1:45 a.m., and a mortar attack was conducted at 7:15 a.m.,” sector M press officer Dmytro Chaly told Interfax on Feb. 24 morning.

Members of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) are present in that area and “they are generally aware of the situation,” he said.

In turn, Anatoliy Stelmakh from the army operation headquarters told Interfax about “a clash near the town of Shyrokyne in the Mariupol sector.”

The Donetsk news agency quoted the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Defense Ministry as saying: “The town of Shyrokyne came under mortar fire from the side of Mariupol last night.”
