The State Agency of Automobile Roads of Ukraine (Ukravtodor) might give up building new large-scale road infrastructure objects in favor of preserving the existing road network, Ukravtodor Head Yevhen Prusenko said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Monday.

“We have to urgently take measures to preserve our roads, and if we do not do this – there is the danger of losing the entire road network,” he said.

According to Prusenko, Ukravtodor will have to take unpopular measures in the form of giving up the large-scale construction of new objects, which are also necessary for the transport network, to increase the volume of road repairs.

He also said that all projects on the construction of road objects that have been started would, of course, be completed.

As reported, with reference to Vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul, the reforming of Ukravtodor must be accompanied by an increase in funding for the maintenance, repair and construction of roads from UAH 16.9 billion foreseen in the national budget for 2013 to UAH 40 billion per year.
