In one of the Ukraine capital’s oldest neighbourhoods, a landmark has become the flashpoint in a battle pitting activists against developers.
Ordinary Kyivites are fighting back against efforts to remodel Hostynnyi Dvir — built in 1809 as a trade complex — destroying its architectural character in the process. Willing to brave freezing temperatures to protest, they are also using social networking in a bid to preserve the neo-classical building once known as the Merchant’s Courtyard.
