Ukraine's parliament speaker and interim president, Oleksandr Turchynov, has said that law enforcement agencies are studying materials on a number of political parties regarding their involvement in supporting separatists in Ukraine, and said that the activity of such political could be banned under a court ruling.
“As for the activity of the Communist Party or any other party, we have a law according to which if there is evidence, and the evidence is now being studied by SBU, the Interior Ministry and other agencies, that any political organization is going beyond the constitution and acting contrary to the constitutional limitations of political activities, or whose actions are a threat to the country, a lawsuit is submitted to court and the court decides on this matter [of banning a political party],” he said at a meeting of the parliament’s conciliatory council on May 12.
An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that the speaker had made this statement in response to MP Viacheslav Kyrylenko’s call on the parliament to pass a law banning the activities of the Communist Party in Ukraine.
At the same time, Turchynov said: “Such materials are being studied with regard to many political forces that are involved in supporting separatists or organizations conducting pseudo-referendums and other provocative actions, including in a combat confrontation in Ukraine.”
He said that the activity of several political organizations had already been banned in Ukraine.
