Acting president and parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchynov says that the Ukrainian army in Crimea remains faithful to the people of Ukraine in spite of the further enhancement of the military presence of the Armed Forces of Russia.

“Despite the position of the international community, the military presence of the Armed Forces of Russia in Crimea is being enhanced. They’ve started to block the military units of the Ukrainian army, internal troops,” he said at a briefing on Monday evening.

Turchynov said he had spoken by phone with the commanders of the Ukrainian military units in Crimea.

“You know even under these very difficult conditions when the military units are surrounded by Russian troops, provocateurs who are constantly trying to create a situation to make them use weapons, our officers, sergeants, soldiers show high soldierly spirit and belief in their own country along with confidence in the triumph of truth, despite having a tough time,” he said.

Turchynov thanked the Ukrainian military men for withstanding provocations and blockades, “the propaganda launched in Crimea when they tell lies about the Ukrainian authorities.”

“Our troops of both defense and interior ministries are bravely performing their duties, staying faithful to the country and the Ukrainian people.”
