You're reading: Turkmenistan’s gas could be not very expensive for Ukraine

If the gas talks between Ukraine and Turkmenistan are successful, Turkmenistan's gas could be sold to Ukraine at a favorable price, an independent energy expert Oleksandr Narbut has said.

"Today, at the first stage of our cooperation, Turkmenistan could agree to sell us gas at a better formula, if all interests are considered. A private conversation was held at the top level [between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow], and we can only guess that the gas could be very inexpensive," the expert said at a press conference on Sept.13.

He added that Ukraine has a unique opportunity to "return to Turkmenistan" and the sides have every chance to restore relations.

Narbut notes that preliminary work had been carried out before the heads of state reached an agreement.

In turn, Deputy Director of the Center for Middle East Studies Serhiy Danylov said that the authorities of Turkmenistan might use the visit by the president of Ukraine as a tool in the gas information war between Russia and Ukraine.

"Of course, the authorities might use this visit for an information and non-information war with Gazprom," he said.
