Former Ukrainian Prime Minister and Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has asked the Prosecutor General to close a criminal case against her.

"Today Yulia Tymoshenko arrived at the prosecutor’s office and handed a complaint to the investigator regarding the illegality of a criminal case opened against her, and demanded that it be closed," Tymoshenko’s spokesperson Maryna Soroka told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

She noted that Tymoshenko had given the investigator a petition to allow her to visit a district in Sumy region on May 5-6.

Soroka said that local residents had asked Tymoshenko to help them resolve some social issues, particularly health care issues.

Soroka said that Tymoshenko had left the building of the Prosecutor General’s Office after handing over these documents.

In April 2011, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office opened a third criminal case against Tymoshenko concerning her exceeding her authority and abusing office in signing gas contracts in 2009.

The case was opened under Part 3 of Article 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

It has been claimed that the actions of the former premier caused losses to the state worth Hr 1.5 billion.
