You're reading: UDAR party proposes to elect Kyiv mayor in early June

UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko has said his party has proposed to hold the election for Kyiv mayor in June 2013.

“The election is being delayed. We’ve submitted a bill proposing to hold them on June 2. The elections haven’t been scheduled yet. Now people say they’ll probably be in the middle of summer, when most of Kyiv’s citizens will be on holiday, when young people finish their studies and leave Kyiv,” he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

According to Klitschko, it is unknown now under which system the elections for Kyiv council will be held.

“There is a law about the capital that says when the elections must be held. The authorities want to make these elections unscheduled, and to elect Kyiv council for two year-term,” the politician said.

However, he again said there was a need to agree on a single candidate from the opposition at these elections.

“We’ll talk about the candidate when the date of the elections is announced. Today, unfortunately, we’re lacking several components: the date of elections and the system according under which they’ll be held,” the MP said.

Moreover, he added: “We certainly will agree on a candidate in order for the situation with Chernovetsky not to be repeated, when many candidates were nominated, but Chernovetsky won for a second time.”

Asked whether the opposition is discussing possible candidacies, the politician said: “There’s a lot of candidates, very many volunteers. But I’m sure we have to pick a candidate who really could win the elections, and really be an opponent to the authorities, not its protégé – someone who won’t do the will of the authorities, but be an independent figure.”
