Kyiv has asked the International Monetary Fund to postpone consideration of a decision to raise gas tariffs for households, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said.

"We have asked the IMF to put off the consideration of this decision until we put everything in order," he said on UT-1 Channel on Tuesday.

Azarov said that at a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, they decided to that all the unresolved issues in this sector should be settled before the increase in tariffs.

The prime minister also said that the government intends to further reduce the deficit of the national JSC Naftogaz Ukrainy’s budget. This, according to the prime minister, will help them to do without the increase in gas tariffs for households.

"Our goal is to reduce the deficit of Naftogaz Ukrainy’s budget. And it will make it possible to take a more considerate approach to the issue of increasing the tariffs for household, to put it mildly, we can even do without this increase," he said.

According to Azarov, the government intends to present its arguments to the IMF.

"We have all the arguments to address this issue in a more considerate way," he said.
