Ukrainian border guards and customs officers are checking Russian humanitarian aid at the Donetsk checkpoint in the Rostov region on the Russian-Ukrainian border, the press center of the army operation in eastern Ukraine said.

“Customs control and clearance of the humanitarian cargo from that country began at the Donetsk checkpoint at 10 a.m. Fifty-nine Ukrainian specialists are participating in the inspection, among them 41 representatives of the Ukrainian State Border Service and 18 customs officers. According to a preliminary agreement, the cargo will be routed to Luhansk,” the press center said in a report posted on Facebook.

The Russian humanitarian aid convoy bound for eastern Ukraine will undergo customs clearance at Russia’s Donetsk border checkpoint in the Rostov region, a spokesman for the Ukrainian State Border Service told Interfax earlier today.

The Izvaryne checkpoint, which the Ukrainian border guards do not control, is adjacent to the Donetsk border post.

The State Border Service reported that all procedures on the border would be performed in the presence of representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The International Committee of the Red Cross will accept the cargo.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry added that authorized Ukrainian agencies supported and monitored by the ICRC and the OSCE would conduct border and customs control of the humanitarian aid and its due clearance. The humanitarian cargo will be transported to the destination points exclusively by the ICRC, which will store and distribute the relief.

“The trilateral contact group will hold a key role in the coordination of security issues and routes of the humanitarian convoys,” the ministry added.

The Russian humanitarian convoy departed to eastern Ukraine from the Moscow region on Aug. 12.
