The registration of volunteers for preparations for and holding the Euro 2012 has started in Ukraine, UEFA Euro 2012 Director in Ukraine Markiyan Lubkivsky said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"The registration of volunteers was launched today," he said, and added that it is planned to involve 6,000 volunteers in Ukraine and Poland in the preparations for and holding the Euro 2012.

Lubkivsky also said that the first ten volunteers have already applied.

Head of the Volunteer Department Andriy Bantser informed that electronic applications could be made on the euro.com Web site from June 14 until Sept. 30.

After selection, the applicants will be interviewed in one of the four cities that will host the football championship.

Not only Ukrainians and Poles can become volunteers.

The main condition is knowledge of English, and to be over 18 years old. In addition, volunteers should have experience in the duties they choose.

There are 20 directions of work for volunteers, in particular, control of admission to championship facilities, accreditation, organization of ceremonies and entertainment for fans, transport and logistic services, information and legal services, meeting guests.

The candidates that succeed in the interview will take a special training course from February until May 2012.

According to the Bantser, volunteers will work from June 8 until July 1, 2012, while some of them will also have to perform duties before or after the tournament.

He also noted that volunteers would not have an opportunity to watch the matches.

They will be provided with insurance, volunteer’s certificate, catering during work, a uniform, which they can keep after the tournament, as well as UEFA and Euro 2012 souvenirs.

Lubkivsky said that except for the selection of volunteers for the Euro 2012 each city that would host the tournament could also select volunteers at the local level.

According to the UEFA Euro 2012 Planning Department, about EUR 8 million will be invested in the volunteer program.
