A press statement initiated by Ukraine in reply to Russia's decision to include Crimea in the Southern Federal District failed to pass at the UN Security Council because of the Russian stance, the Ukrainian mission to the UN said.

“Russia blocked the Ukrainian draft of the UN Security Council’s press statement on Crimea,” the mission said on Twitter.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry sent a note to Russia protesting against the decision to include Crimea territory in the Russian Southern Federal District.

Russian President Vladimir Putin abolished the Crimean Federal District and included Crimea and Sevastopol in the Southern Federal District on July 28. According to the presidential order, the Southern Federal District currently comprises of Adygeya, Kalmykia, Crimea, the Krasnodar territory, the Astrakhan region, the Volgograd region, the Rostov region and Sevastopol.
