You're reading: Ukrainian businessman Balashov arrested in absentia by Russian court

A Moscow court has upheld the investigators' request to arrest in absentia Hennadiy Balashov, placed on the international wanted list on the accusation of extremist statements towards Russian citizens living in Ukraine, Russian Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said.

“Moscow’s Basmanny Court has ruled to arrest in absentia Balashov wanted internationally as pre-trial restrictions upon the request of the Russian Investigative Committee main investigative directorate,” Markin told Interfax on Thursday.

Balashov is a defendant in the criminal case on inciting hatred and abetting attempted murder, the spokesman said.

“Investigators believe that on March 10, when speaking at Independence Square in Kyiv, Balashov made public appeals aimed at inciting hatred and enmity towards Russian citizens, who are in Ukraine, and abetting those present to murder them,” Markov said.

Russian investigators opened a criminal case regarding Ukrainian businessman Balashov, Markin told Interfax on March 12.

At the same time, similar criminal case was opened against Right Sector leader Dmytro Yarosh, who is accused of public appeals to anti-Russian forces for extremist actions and terror on Russia.
