Ukrainian experts are studying the causes of the accident at Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant and are ready to continue to help Japan overcome the aftermath of the disaster, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn has said.

"Ukrainian specialists are ready (to help Japan). They are already working [on it]. Our experts are involved chiefly in finding out the causes of the accident, which of them can be attributed to the influence of unforeseen natural disasters, what was caused by the so-called human factor, and where technical and technological flaws come in," Lytvyn told journalists on Saturday after visiting the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant.

"I must say that from talking to the employees of the power plant and other representatives of the Japanese side, my colleagues and I had the impression that they had not yet fully realized what happened," the speaker said adding: "I got the impression that they understand the need to use Ukraine’s experience, Ukrainian specialists and experts to solve this complicated problem," the speaker said.

Lytvyn stressed that Japan understood the need to speed up the signing of an agreement between the governments of the two countries on cooperation in improving the post-accident response to emergency situations at nuclear power plants.

"I think our visit and a discussion of these issues will speed up the adoption of relevant decisions," the speaker said.

According to him, the delegation of the Ukrainian parliament was the first foreign delegation, which was allowed to visit the Fukushima-1.
