You're reading: Ukrainian government is not discussing state of emergency, says Azarov’s press officer

The issue of declaring a state of emergency in Ukraine was not raised or discussed in the weekly meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on Monday, Azarov's spokesman Vitaliy Lukyanenko has told Interfax-Ukraine.

“This issue was not raised and was not discussed,” he said.

Lukyanenko said the government is working on real issues related to the country’s life. Specifically, the provision of housing and jobs for orphaned children and children left without parental care was addressed in the Monday meeting, he said.

Speaking about Azarov’s reaction to the clashes between protesters and police that occurred on Kyiv’s Hrushevskoho Street on January 19, Lukyanenko said: “It’s very negative. The country is facing other real problems.”
