The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on Thursday passed a law approving Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's decision to send Ukrainian peacekeeping troops to Ivory Coast to provide support for United Nations operations in the country.

Some 242 MPs voted for the law on Thursday.

According to the document, the deployment of the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent in Ivory Coast will be extended until September 30.

On May 13, a draft law was registered in the Ukrainian parliament to approve Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to send 70 servicemen from the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent, which is operating as part of the UN Mission in Liberia, to Ivory Coast until the end of September 2011.

As reported, on February 4, 2011, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law approving a presidential decree to send Ukrainian peacekeepers to Ivory Coast. Under the decree, up to 60 Ukrainian peacekeepers were to be sent to support the UN operation in Ivory Coast, under the terms determined by the UN Security Council, for a period of up to three months.
