The Committee to Protect Journalists welcomes reports that the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office has started an investigation against former President Leonid Kuchma's possible role in abducting and killing journalist Georgy Gongadze.

The international organization has called on Ukrainian investigators to ensure a clear and transparent investigation, the committee said.

"We welcome the long-running investigation concerning former President Leonid Kuchma’s involvement in killing our colleague Georgy Gongadze and are calling on the authorities to make this investigation independent and transparent and hold it in a most careful way," Nina Ognianova, the coordinator of the Committee to Protect Journalists’ program for Europe and Central Asia said.

"We are calling on all Ukrainian authorities to check all the suspects and timely inform the Gongadze family about the course of the investigation," she said.
