You're reading: UN Security Council session on Donbas ends with no communiqué

In a course of UN Security Council session, there was a verbal skirmish between deputy foreign minister of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko and Russian Permanent Representative at the United Nations Organization Vitaly Churkin because of the text of the statement for press following the results of the sitting on Thursday initiated by the Russian delegation.

According to Churkin, the statement contained two items: a call to the members of the Security Council to the conflicting sides in the Donbas conflict to fulfill measures envisaged by the Minsk Agreements, as well as the UN Security Council’s call to Ukraine to complete its investigation into events in Odesa on May 2, 2014.

For his part, Prystaiko said that Ukraine satisfied with the first part of the statement. Talking about Odesa, he proposed to broaden it with necessity to investigate into the events in Crimea. “I think this [Russian proposal] is unfair attempt to cover a tragic event [in Odesa],” the Ukrainian diplomat added.

Churkin accused Ukraine of failure to implement signed by the then government on of February 21, 2014 by Viktor Yanukovych.

Prystaiko said the Russian envoy didn’t sign the aforementioned agreement.

Moreover, Russia names February 20, 2014 the date of Crimea’s annexation, and this a day before signing of the mentioned agreements that can prove that Russia planned seizure of Crimea beforehand despite these agreements.

The dispute was brought to a deadlock and the session was closed.
