The United States is concerned about the selective use of the law in Ukraine, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas Melia has said.

"The selective use of law is inadmissible for any democratic state," he said at a meeting with BYT leader Yulia Tymoshenko on Friday, the party’s press service reported.

He also expressed concerns about the increasing pressure being applied on the civil society, the worsening of the situation in the mass media and narrowing of political pluralism.

"The United States is attentively watching the development of the situation in Ukraine. Relevant statements will be made about those events that cause us concern," the U.S. deputy assistant secretary said.

Tymoshenko, in turn, thanked Melia for the attention to Ukraine and noted that the priorities of her political party are the strengthening of democracy, the observance of human rights and Ukraine’s integration with the European Union.
