Fifty-five U.S. Peace Corps volunteers, who will service in western and central Ukraine, have participated in an official oath taking ceremony in Ukraine.

These 55 participants in a two-week training program will go to different residential areas in western and central Ukraine – from Zakarpattia to Poltava regions – and will work through the following programs: teaching of English as a foreign language, the development of communities, and youth development., Peace Corps Ukraine Country Director Denny Robertson said at the ceremony in Kyiv on Dec. 23.

Their service term in Ukraine will be two years. It is already the 48th group, which started work in Ukraine. The program was renewed after a break caused by Euromaidan events in Ukraine.

The U.S. Peace Corps in Ukraine was established in 1992, when Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk and U.S. President George Bush signed a bilateral agreement.

The Corps aims to assist Ukrainians by providing skilled experts to meet existing technical qualification needs, by encouraging better understanding between Americans and Ukrainians.

The partners of the Peace Corps are Ukraine’s Education and Science Ministry and the Family, Youth and Sports Ministry.
