The United States has expressed support to measures proposed by the EU leaders on the settling of the situation in Ukraine, the non-observation of which will entail new sanctions, State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said on Friday.

“Well, we certainly agree with the steps they’ve been asked to take,” she said at a briefing in Washington.

“We have never outlined a deadline for sanctions, as I said yesterday. We are in very close consultation with them, but obviously, we can make decisions at the time of our choosing on sanctions, and we have done so and will continue to do so,” she said.

Earlier on Friday, EU leaders gave three more days to take measures to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine, otherwise new targeted sanctions will be imposed.

“The European Council recalls that the European Commission, the EEAS and the Member States have been undertaking preparatory work on targeted measures, as it requested in March, so that further steps can be taken without delay. In that respect, the European Council expects that by Monday 30 June the following steps will have been taken,” reads a statement made after the EU summit in Brussels.
