Dnipropetrovsk – A total of 3.6 million pensioners in Ukraine are living in poverty, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“We should at least reach the level of social security comparable to that in the countries with similar economies, such as our neighbors,” he said at a meeting in Dnipropetrovsk on Tuesday.

“We have to catch up, and have to solve this problem,” Yanukovych said.

The president asked First Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Khoroshkovsky about minimum pensions and the size of living wages, and said that this problem needs to be solved as quickly as possible.

The meeting was attended by deputy prime ministers, ministers, and the heads of the major industrial regions in Ukraine, as well as the heads of major enterprises in the coal mining, metallurgy and engineering industries, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent said.
