Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has called for the will of all voters at the parliamentary elections 2012 to be respected.

The president made the call at a sitting of the Council of Regions on Wednesday.

“Elections aren’t a sport, they are the will of the citizens, the
nation, as the highest source of power. That’s why, first of all, we
should respect the choice of all voters, and in no way should we divide
the voters into political categories. The electors are equal and all of
them are ours,” he said.

Yanukovych also called on the heads of the local government bodies to
respect the deputies who are elected, regardless of which political
force they represent, or whether they are independent candidates.

The president again said that the return to a mixed voting system
would restore a “fully fledged dialogue” between the electorate and the
authorities.

Moreover, he said the parliamentary elections should considerably
increase the trust of the citizens both in parliament and the
authorities in general.

Yanukovych expressed hope that the forthcoming elections will match
European standards, as the presidential elections did in 2010.

“You know that the last president’s elections received a positive
estimate by the international community, and that’s why these elections
should be just as good,” he said.
