Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said that the law enforcement bodies should fight corruption more efficiently, since it restrains reforms in Ukraine.

"An extremely important task is to fight corruption and criminality because the low effectiveness of the work of law enforcement agencies in this sphere destroys the trust of citizens in the state and puts the brakes on public development," he said at the festive sitting, devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Internal troops of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

Yanukovych said reforms in Ukraine are being introduced with great difficulty. "While overcoming corruption and developing economic freedoms, reforms often face even direct opposition from the bribable bureaucracy, but I’m quite sure that we’ve chosen the right way, and we won’t stop," he said.

Addressing to the officers of the Internal troops, the president said their duty, and his, was to maintain civil order and ensure the stable development of Ukraine, and to maintain the course of modernization of the country. He said the main political prerequisite for the introduction of the course of modernization was an effectively acting government and a stable situation in the country.
