You're reading: Yanukovych: Land reform should be immediately conducted

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has stressed the need to conduct land reform in the near future.

"We can’t delay the holding of land reform. We must move forward without stopping. Since the owners of land plots don’t receive proper payments for rent, speculators are currently ruling this market. It should not be so. I support the idea of bringing order to this issue," he told reporters in Chernivtsi on Tuesday.

Yanukovych said that the management of the land market was "a very painful process" that involves "a lot of politics."

He also noted that in terms of the implementation of land reform, the authorities would certainly consult with the public, as this is a sensitive issue.

"We will consult with the people. I don’t exclude us holding [public] hearings on the land issue," Yanukovych said.
