Ukraine, as a non-aligned state, needs U.S. support for its territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders, as well as economic and energy security, President Viktor Yanukovych has said in his annual address to the Verkhovna Rada, the text of which was distributed to MPs in parliament on Tuesday.

The president stressed the importance of implementing joint projects
with the United States on the destruction of surplus arms and developing
military cooperation.

“A separate urgent task on the agenda of Ukrainian-U.S. relations in
this area is the establishment of cooperation as part of the Ocean
Shield operation to combat piracy,” reads the statement.

Yanukovych also noted the urgency of Ukrainian-U.S. cooperation in
the economic sphere, especially in the trade and investment sector, the
prospects of cooperation in agriculture, “where Ukraine has significant
manufacturing capabilities, which helps make a significant contribution
to ensuring global food security.”
