You're reading: Yanukovych orders probe into bank robberies in Donetsk and Izmail

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has instructed Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko and Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Valeriy Khoroshkovsky to take the necessary measures to investigate bank robberies in Donetsk and Izmail, the presidential press service reported on Thursday.

The interior minister and the SBU chief should report to the head of state on the work done by Jan. 3, 2012.

Zakharchenko was also ordered to take urgent measures to strengthen law and order, especially regarding the personal safety of citizens.

The president also instructed Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Serhiy Arbuzov and the interior minister to take urgent measures to strengthen the protection of the buildings of banks and ensure the safe transportation and collection of cash.

They should report on the work done by Dec. 31, 2011.

As reported, five employees of a PrivatBank branch were killed during a bank robbery in Donetsk on Thursday, Dec. 29.
