The Ukrainian authorities will bend maximum efforts to amend the situation with the poor social security of veterans of Chornobyl nuclear disaster cleanup, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"I believe that far from everything has been done for the veterans of the mitigation of the disaster aftermath to have a decent life and conditions of health protection. We will bend every effort to amend the situation," his address on the day of remembrance of the Chornobyl accident cleanup circulated on Wednesday says.

He called for an open dialogue between the Chornobyl veterans and the government.

He said that in 2012 pensions will be boosted to disabled veterans, specials hospitals will be upgraded and their patients will be provided with free medicines and better meals.
