Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a law that foresees criminal liability for wittingly falsely reporting threats from mining, the president reported in a posting on its Web site.
The president signed a law No. 4955-VI “On amendments into the Article No. 259 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on the stricter penalties for wittingly falsely reporting a threat to the safety of citizens” on June 6.
According to the new version of the Criminal Code, deliberately falsely reporting preparations to cause an explosion, fire or other actions that threaten to people’s lives is punishable by from two to six years of imprisonment.
If the same actions that cause serious consequences or the actions are committed repeatedly, the law foresees from four to eight years of imprisonment.
Earlier the Criminal Code of Ukraine envisaged a fine for false bomb threats worth a total of from 500 to 1,000 of non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens, or detention for six months, or imprisonment for up to five years.
As reported, Verkhovna Rada adopted the corresponding law by 264 votes for on June 7 this year.
