The gas price issue is an economic problem for Ukraine, although some people are trying to politicize it, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 television channel on March 18.

Yanukovych added that many unresolved issues with Russia, apart from the gas issue, have been settled during his presidency.

"I’ve managed to do a lot with Dmitry Anatolyevich [Medvedev] over the short term of our cooperation, over the two years since 2010. There remains one big issue [the gas issue], which is disturbing not only Ukraine and Russia, but also Europe today, and drawn attention of the world. For Ukraine this issue was and remains an economic one, but of course some people have politicized it," he said.

When asked what he was taking to Moscow on March 19, Yanukovych said: "Hope, as usual."

The Ukrainian president also said he hoped that Kyiv and Moscow would have sufficient political will and wisdom to settle the issue. He refused to say how long he thought it would take to resolve the gas problem.
