Ukraine will be able to complete the heating season without buying Russian gas, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

“I would like to tell you that we will live through the winter without Russian gas for the first time in the entire history of Ukraine,” the prime minister told diplomats in Kyiv on Friday. He said the Naftogaz reform had made that happen.

“This is a real reform and a real step towards diversification of natural gas supply by Ukraine,” Yatseniuk said.

He thanked the EU, the EBRD, the World Bank and other international partners for the assistance which helped Ukraine achieve “real diversification and energy independence.”
