You're reading: Zurabov hopes for speedy settlement of Russian-Ukrainian cheese dispute

Russian ambassador to Kyiv Mikhail Zurabov believes that the cheese dispute between Ukraine and Russia will be settled shortly.

"I think that in the near future we will succeed in resolving the issue so that neither side would provoke the other to actions that we will later regret," he told the press in Kyiv on Friday, Feb. 17

He said that in this case the conflict assumed a public aspect that does not permit a constructive solution.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian sides "said things that will remain fresh in our memories for some more time and that are taken into account in making decisions," Zurabov said.

"The issue was even raised at the last meeting of the two foreign ministers that took place at the beginning of this week in Nizhny Novgorod where we agreed to stick to internationally recognized standards of settling such issues," Zurabov said.

"The visits of Ukrainian representatives, talks on these issues will be monitored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant embassies which, unfortunately, did not happen until recently," he said adding that previously such talks were held at the level of the heads of corresponding authorities which resulted in communication problems.

Meanwhile, Russian Chief Sanitation Doctor Gennady Onishchenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Friday that the list of Ukrainian cheese manufacturers that are banned in Russia, may be enlarged if his service continues identifying commodities that do not Russian requirements.
