You're reading: Freedom House notes decline in democracy in Ukraine

Freedom House has given Ukraine a "partly free" status in the Freedom in the World 2013 rating, noting a considerable decline in democracy in the country.

According to a report posted on the organization’s Web site, Ukraine’s downward trend was due to a decline in the quality of its parliamentary elections, greater government pressure on the opposition, and a new language law that favored Russian speakers, while neglecting smaller minorities.

Ukraine is in the same group as Russia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Paraguay, Nigeria and some other countries.
