You're reading: Rada extends Kharkiv territory by 14.4%

Kharkiv, the second biggest city in Ukraine, has been official increased in size by 14.4%, from 30,604 hectares to 35,002 hectares.

The Verkhovna Rada on Thursday supported a corresponding decision with 244 votes, with 226 votes required for approval of the decision.

According to the document, Kharkiv regional council addressed to the parliament asking for the extension of the regional center after approving a corresponding decision on June 21, 2012.

“The need to set a new border of Kharkiv was arose to provide for the complex, balanced, and economically justified development of the city’s infrastructure,” the text of the resolution read.

The land planning draft on amendments and fixing Kharkiv’s border foresees including of 4,450 hectares of lands from neighboring village and settlement councils in the borders of the city, with the simultaneous exclusion from the territory of the city of an area of land of 0.05 hectares.
