You're reading: US calling for release of Ukrainian journalist abducted by Syrian rebels

Washington is following the events around Ukrainian journalist Anhar Kochneva abducted by rebels in Syria and calling for the release of the woman, U.S. Department of State Spokesman Patrick Ventrell has said.

“We are aware of this incident. We believe that this woman needs to be
released. But I cannot tell you any more about the case,” he said at a briefing
in Washington.

“I’m not going to tell you about our confidential diplomatic work on the
issue. It is enough to say that we are aware of what happened,” added
Ventrell.

Ukrainian journalist Anhar Kochneva was abducted by the gunmen of the
so-called free Syrian army in Syria in October. The kidnappers of the journalist
threatened to kill her on December 13 if a ransom of $50 million is not
paid.
