President Viktor Yanukovych and the three political opposition leaders failed to reach a compromise during Jan. 23 talks to end the nation’s political crisis. Five regional councils in central and western Ukraine were taken over on Jan. 23 by disgruntled citizens as the grip and authority of  President Viktor Yanukovych begins to weaken. Protesters took over gubernatorial buildings in Lviv, Ternopil, Cherkassy, Rivne, and Khmelnytsky. Police later retook the building in Cherkassy.
