The law on the principles of the state language policy has to ensure the equality of languages in Ukraine and it will be amended if necessary, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"Time will pass and we'll see the pros and cons [of the law]. It is not a dogma. If it is necessary to make some amendments to the law, we will make them," the president told journalists in Sevastopol on Aug. 14.

Yanukovych recalled that the law has recently taken force and it is too soon to sum up results of its implementation.

"One thing is absolutely clear – we are moving gradually towards the European charter on languages, which is really important," the president said.

He added that a working group has been formed of the authors of the law and "people that would like to improve it."

"The law has to ensure the equality of languages in Ukraine, so as to avoid problems in all regions and be in line with the European Charter," Yanukovych said.
