Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has congratulated Ukrainian citizens on the 21st anniversary of the country's independence.

"It has taken us just two decades to build our own state. Thanks to the patriotism of the previous generations and the perseverance of those who created Ukraine's statehood, we have managed to prove that we are the masters on our land and are able to respond to internal and external challenges with dignity. This is the main indisputable result of our independent development," Yanukovych said in his Independence Day message.

Ukraine is a "young state with ambitious plans that is looking into the future confidently," the president said.

"The stage-by-stage stable revival of our economy has opened up opportunities to raise investment, modernize infrastructure and maintain high standards of living. The success of holding the European football championship convincingly demonstrated to the whole world that our country is able to implement global projects," Yanukovych said.

The president said that he believes in Ukraine, its success and prosperity.

"I am convinced that we will certainly achieve new heights," he said.
