You're reading: Yanukovych wants more acquittals

Ukraine's judicial system should bring in a greater number of acquittals, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“The time has passed when only 2-3% of acquittals were brought in, as once happened,” he said at a meeting with the heads of delegations of prosecutor general’s offices of CIS member states.

Yanukovych said that in international practice the percentage of acquittals was usually at least 15%.

“So we don’t know when we will reach these figures, but we definitely know that our goal is to protect human rights. And I think that prosecutors shouldn’t just want this. They should ensure that such a system develops and starts functioning,” he said.
