AMSTERDAM (AP) — Muslims witnessing Geert Wilders' hate speech trial claim the anti-Islam lawmaker's speeches have led to attacks on Dutch Muslims and pleaded with judges Monday to convict and fine him.

Mohammed Enait says that, as a result of Wilders’ criticisms of Islam, Muslim children are insulted on the street, women are spat upon for wearing headscarves and attacks on mosques have become commonplace.

Wilders is facing charges of inciting hatred, including comparing Islam with Naziism and calling for a ban on the Quran. His trial is a symbolic test of the balance between free speech and freedom of religion.

Prosecutors acknowledged last week that they had failed to prove a case against Wilders and called for his acquittal. A verdict is expected Nov. 5.
