WARSAW, Poland — A doctor says that the life of Poland's last communist leader hospitalized after a heavy nosebleed is not in danger.

Hospital spokesman Piotr Dabrowiecki said Thursday that the 89-year-old Wojciech Jaruzelski can probably be released home next week.

Jaruzelski was taken to Warsaw’s army hospital Wednesday after several spells of nosebleed in recent days.

Jaruzelski recently underwent chemotherapy for cancer.

Jaruzelski’s hospitalization comes on the eve of the 31st anniversary of martial law, a repressive crackdown that he ordered against Lech Walesa’s Solidarity movement in an attempt to crush the proponents of democracy. Right wing activists usually mark the anniversary with noisy protests in front of his house.
