You're reading: Sochi mayoral hopeful doused with ammonia

MOSCOW - A spokeswoman says a Kremlin critic running for mayor of the Russian city hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics has been splashed with ammonia by assailants.

Olga Shorina says Boris Nemtsov was attacked outside his campaign headquarters Monday in the Black Sea city of Sochi. Shorina says one person approached Nemtsov with a bouquet of flowers and another splashed him with ammonia.

She said some got in his eyes, but he apparently suffered no lasting injury and went ahead with a scheduled news conference after a delay.

Nemtsov hopes to be elected as Sochi’s mayor next month.

He published an appeal to Russia’s president Monday in which he criticized plans for the Olympics in Sochi and suggested many events should be held elsewhere in Russia instead.
