You're reading: Folk dance like you’ve never seen it

There is at least one thing that Fidel Castro, Mao Zedong, Elvis Presley and Salvador Dali have in common.

All of these colorful individuals have been entertained by the world famous Pavlo Virsky National Folk Dance Ensemble.

You can join the list of these colorful personalities if you spare some time on Dec. 22.

If that recommendation is not good enough, here are some other facts.

Formed in 1937, the dance group has been preserving Ukrainian folk dance traditions for more than seven decades.

Its founder, Pavlo Virsky, believed into bringing theatrical performance into folk dance. The whole body, and even the face, follow the rhythm of the dances, not just the feet.

Decades on, the philosophy still seems to work as the group spends much of its time traveling the world.

They are particularly popular with the Ukrainian diaspora.

Split jumps, acrobatics, synchronized formations, bright costumes and vivacious Ukrainian spirit are all a part of their performance.

Thu, Dec 22, 7 p.m., Palats Ukraina, 103 Velyka Vasylkivska St., tickets: Hr 80 – 450.
